Famous Sikh pilgrim site, the Ram Rai Gurudwara located at Jhanda Mohalla is one of the most religious centres in Dehradun. This devout place was established in the 17th century and remains the oldest and holiest pilgrimage place for the Udaseen sect of Sikh community residing in Dehradun.
History of Ram Rai Gurudwara
Famous Sikh pilgrimage site, the Ram Rai Gurudwara was established in 17th century by Ram Rai, the eldest son Sri Har Raj Ji, the 7th Guru of Sikhs. Ram Rai Ji built this holy place with the help and support of then ruler of Dehradun. The story goes that when Ram Rai was banished from his home, he settled in Dehradun and constructed the famous monumental and historical Ram Rai Gurudwara.
Inside the Gurudwara
On entering inside the Ram Rai Gurudwara, you can see several portraits of gods, goddesses, saints and many religious stories painted on the wall. There is also a huge pond in the front, measuring 230*80 feet which had dried over the years as people used to dump garbage in it but with constant efforts, the pond has been revived now.
Architecture of Guru Ram Rai Gurudwara:
The marvellous architecture of Ram Rai Gurudwara is an epitome of Islamic and Hindu architecture. The arch walls are painted with floral motifs, animal, birds, trees, symmetrical faces having pointed noses and deep eyes that are a symbol of the colour scheme of Kangra-Guler and Mughal Art. While the high minarets, dome and round pinnacles are the models of Islamic architecture.
Fairs and Festival:
In the memory of Guru Ram Rai, a flag is hoisted each year to celebrate the coming of Guru Ram Rai to Doon Valley. The pompous Jhanda Fair, marked by a flag hoisting ceremony is observed on the fifth day of Holi. This fair is attended by a large number of Sikh as well as Hindu devotees who come to a be a part of the auspicious event.
Best Time to Visit:
Guru Ram Rai Gurudwara can be visited any time of the year but if you want to be a part of the Jhanda Fair then you must visit this place between March and April. This Jhanda Sahib fair is held 5 days after the Holi Purnima of the Hindu calendar.
How to reach Ram Rai Gurudwara
Guru Ram Rai Gurudwara is located at Jhanda Mohalla, near Saharanpur Chowk and Paltan Market road. It is situated about 46 km from Rishikesh, 53 km from Haridwar and about 243 km from Delhi. One can easily access this place by local bus and auto from any point of Dehradun city. Dehradun railway station is the nearest railhead only 10 minutes away from the Gurudwara. Jolly Grant airport at 29 km away is the closest air connectivity from the Gurudwara.
